  • ABOUT THIS PAINTING

These bigger dot paintings really start to visually vibrate and resonate with universal themes of the sublime of things big and small. Not only do they make a eye-catching statement the dots and colours mesmerise with sublime possibilities contained within the tiniest things.

It is from my 'Dots & Little Things' & 'Infinite Possibilities' series around 1997-2006 which dealt with various forms of communication and where I really literally put print media under the microscope. Essentially it was the beginning of my fascination with all things microscopic and minuscule worlds.

This series explores lines of communication and I put print media literally under the microscope. The dots in the painting have a direct relationship with the dots used in mass media print images. I took tiny areas from newspaper print images and put under visual devises such as magnifying glasses and microscopes. I then reproduced, abstracted and manipulated the dots I saw, painting each one by hand with textural paint. The effect created is these intense clusters of rhythmic vibrating spots and dots that pulsate across the canvas. Each painting becomes these crazy clusters of rhythmic vibrating spots and dots that pulsate through space. Reminiscent of dancing molecules and frenzied atoms appearing in my later work.

Although the process of making was very important, this series is also a lot about seeing and looking and very heavily influenced by POP art, especially Bridget Riley.

What I enjoy most about my paintings is they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as making their walls sing.

This is a little of what David Thomas, who was kind enough to do an essay for this exhibition, had to say about the ‘Infinite Possibilities’ series....’ Discovered beneath the microscope, Jacquelyn Stephens explores the minutiae of the processed image, reduced to its component dots of colour. She likens this to scientific investigation of cellular structures, both artist and scientist employing the microscope as the means of magnification and entry into a world beyond normal vision. Immersed in these patterns of colour, she creates on her canvases illusions quite different from her sources, of forms floating in new fields of space, investigating the interplay between pictorial depth and the flatness of the painted surface’.
